Technicians: Know your new CPE requirements
Beginning July 1, 2023, pharmacy technicians in Georgia saw some changes to the CPE requirements needed to renew their biennial registrations.
Pharmacy technicians are required to have at least 20 CPE hours to renew their license. Licenses are renewed on a biennial cycle – every two years on a cycle of odd-numbered years, and the years run July 1 to June 30.
The first time you’ll need to confirm CPE credits before renewing your license is June 30, 2025. The number of credits varies depending on the time the technician registered for the first time.
- If a pharmacy technician is registered for the first time during the first six months (July 1 – December 31, 2023) of their two-year license that falls in an odd-numbered year (the biennium), they will be required to obtain 20 hours of CPE credit before their renewal date. This means that all technicians who registered on or after July 1, 2023 and through December 31, 2023, need 20 hours of CPE credit before renewing on July 1, 2025.
- If a technician is registered for the first time during the following 12 months of the following year (January 1 – December 31, 2024) they will be required to obtain 10 hours of CPE credit.
- If a technician is registered in the last six months of the current biennium (January 1 – June 30, 2025), they will be considered exempt from CE credits for that remaining biennium only.
All existing requirements for pharmacy technicians, including board approval and the ratio of pharmacists to technicians, remain in place.
In addition, per Georgia HB 416 which went into effect May 2, 2023, in order to administer immunizations to patients, licensed technicians must complete at least two hours of CPE credits specific to immunization protocols.
